Policy features:

  • Covers you, up to $1 million each claim, for amounts that you become legally obligated to pay as a result of a professional liability claim arising out of a covered medical incident.
  • Covers you, up to $3 million annual aggregate, for all covered claims during the policy period.
The NSO/CNA program offers both occurrence and claims made professional liability insurance coverage.
As an admitted insurer, CNA complies with state insurance department requirements, including the filing and approval of forms and rates. Admitted insurers also are required to pay a portion of their income into the state's insurance guaranty association fund. In the event that an admitted insurer becomes insolvent, the state will help to pay policyholder claims. A.M. Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of A (Excellent) for CNA Financial Corporation. The rating actions reflect CNA’s excellent level of risk-adjusted capitalization, consistent and profitable operating results and established position as a leading writer within the U.S. commercial lines segment.
Insures you, up to the applicable sub-limit of liability, for amounts you are legally obligated to pay as a result of covered claims involving acts of sexual misconduct related to professional services. The sexual misconduct sub-limit is included within the professional liability limit of liability.
This coverage reimburses you, subject to the insurer’s approval, for costs to notify patients of a disclosure of confidential personal information in compliance with privacy protection laws. It also covers specified HIPAA fines and penalties that you become legally obligated to pay.
With your own individual coverage, you’ll have your own defense attorney designated by the insurer to represent you in court, when necessary. Covered legal fees in connection with a covered claim are in addition to your liability limits—WIN OR LOSE.
Coverage is available for incidents that occur on the job and after hours as well. Your coverage remains in force even if you change jobs or during a period of unemployment.
Should you be involved in a professional liability, Good Samaritan, personal injury or malplacement claim, we will not settle any claim without your consent which will not be unreasonably withheld. Other insurers may make similar claims, but if they go to court and lose—you get stuck paying 20-30% of any court judgement that goes over the original settlement offer.
A professional liability insurance policy through NSO is portable, so you can take it with you wherever you go. Whether you have a second job, volunteer, move, or change jobs, your policy is there to help insure you.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have questions. We have answers. (It's why we're here.)

I work for several different employers. Will that affect my coverage or rate?

Not necessarily. The rate you pay is based on whether you are an individual or a business. If you're an individual, it also depends on whether you receive a W2 or 1099 tax form. Talk with a NSO representative for more information.

I'm starting my own company. Do you have a policy that will cover my company for malpractice?

Yes. NSO offers professional liability insurance to nursing firms, providing many of the same coverages our individual program offers. Our coverage can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your firm. Get more information on our affordable liability coverage for nursing firms.

Why do I need an individual professional liability policy? Won't my employer's insurance policy cover me?

Professional liability insurance safeguards you against allegations of malpractice. While your employer may provide coverage for you, it may not be enough to cover you in all cases. Your employer's policy is designed to preserve the employers' needs and interests first.

There are plenty more where those came from.
