Understand Your Liability Risk: Top Reasons Nurses are Sued for Malpractice

Date: Wednesday, April 29, 2026
Time: 12:00 PM ET – 1:00pm ET
Duration: 1 hour*

Overview:
NSO & CNA released our fifth published analysis of nursing claims from the most recent 5 years. Professional liability data provides insight into the underlying causes in liability cases as it can reveal missteps, clinical errors, patterns of communication, and judgment failures that contributed to adverse events.

Using case studies and claim data, nurses can examine top areas of liability through the experiences of their peers. Most importantly, this session provides you with practice recommendations that you can use to help prevent or defend against malpractice allegations, while also enhancing patient safety.

Objectives:
  1. Analyze the actions and issues that prompted allegations of negligence or unprofessionalism against nurses in malpractice lawsuits and State Board of Nursing complaints.
  2. Define the average incurred expenses for nurses involved in malpractice lawsuits or licensing board matters.
  3. Identify processes that nurses can implement into their practice to reduce their potential liability.

Speaker Information:
  • Jennifer Flynn, CPHRM, Risk Manager, Nurses Service Organization (NSO)
  • Patricia Harmon, RN, MM, CPHRM, Risk Control Consulting Director, CNA
